Abrasive grains

The primary materials used are fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide and alumina zirconia. All products are produced using substantial amounts of electrical energy. In the case of aluminium oxide the principal raw materials are bauxite and alumina. For silicon carbide the main raw material is petroleum coke. Alumina zirconias are produced using variable amounts of alumina and zircon sands depending on the hardness & toughness of the abrasive grit requirements.

There are a wide range of products based on chemistry, particle size, grain shape and special treatments. For abrasives particle size is especially carefully controlled in accordance with European Standards - FEPA, American Standards - ANSI, and Japanese Standards - JIS

As well as being an integral part of the production of bonded and coated abrasives, the materials are also used in other applications such as shot blasting, refractories and many general industrial applications, particularly for the flooring, lapping and polishing industries.

Technical information

FEPA published grains standards. To order the F-mastergrits for micro, P-Mastergrits for macro and as well the checking mineral, you have to contact directly Dr. Ing. P. Hof at the Staatliche Materialprüfungsanstalt Darmstadt:

Grafenstraße 2, 64283 Darmstadt, Germany
0049(0)6151/1625142
0049(0)6151/1625125
hof@mpa-ifw.tu-darmstadt.de

One standard is sold for 22€ for non-members and 20€ for FEPA members (+ VAT 19% and postage costs). To place an order, you need to send an-email with your VAT number. You will then receive an invoice. The document(s) will be sent to you as soon as we have received your payment that can be done by bank transfer or credit card (we need the provider and name of the owner card, the card number and date of validity).

You can consult the list of the standards by clicking on the "download" icon below.

GRIT SIZES

F-grit sizes bonded

Aluminium oxide & silicon carbide grains
FEPA-Standard 42-1:2006: Grains of fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide and other abrasive materials for bonded abrasives and for general industrial applications Macrogrits F 4 to F 220
FEPA-Standard 42-2:2006: Grains of fused aluminium oxide, silicon carbide and other abrasive materials for bonded abrasives and for general industrial applications Microgrits F 230 to F 2000

The mean diameters of macrogrits shown in the table are estimated and for information only, the FEPA-Standard defines them as a range and not a single value. The particle size distribution of macrogrits is determined by sieving, while the microgrits have been measured by sedimentation (photosedimentometer).
More information can be found in the FEPA-Standards 42-1:2006 ; 42-2:2006 and in ISO 8486. Micro-F-mastergrits can be obtained from Staatliche Materialprüfungsanstalt Darmstadt
