Abrasives End-User Safety: A Major Concern for American and European producers

European Abrasives Experts Meet American Counterparts

Abrasives End-User Safety: A Major Concern for American and European producers

Paris, France - The Unified Abrasives Manufacturers Association (UAMA), representing the American producers of abrasive products, held its Fall business meetings from November 9th to 11th, in Newport, Rhode Island.

For this occasion, FEPA members, experts from the European abrasive producer’s community, were invited to meet their American counterparts. Both organisations strive for the improvement of abrasive products safety and for raising awareness among the end-users on how to safely use the products.Abrasives products are commonly used in all industries, from mechanical, car, electronics to construction and building industries, and by DIYers to cut off, grind, polish, finish, and drill.

The producers represented in UAMA and FEPA have contributed in the design of safety standards for abrasive products and safety codes, called ANSI standards in the United States and EN standards in Europe. The ANSI standards for abrasives wheels (ANSI B7.1) and coated abrasives (ANSI B7.7) contain information for the end-users, like in the FEPA Safety codes, and technical safety requirements for producers of certain abrasive products. UAMA and FEPA have had ongoing discussions to coordinate their effort in developing standards and shaping their messages to the end-users.

FEPA had the opportunity to present their flagship product, Abrasives Safety, which is the European reference on safety for abrasive products and abrasive end-users

About FEPA

FEPA, the Federation of European Producers of Abrasives, is an association representing over 80% of the European producers of abrasive products, a world leader, including SMEs and international companies in the world, as well as the abrasives National Associations and their members. FEPA Members cover 90% of abrasives European production, exporting 35% of it in the world.

FEPA’s missions, aside from representing the European abrasive industry, are to promote the safe use of abrasives produced in Europe and the safety of the end-users, to inform members on the evolution of the regulatory framework in Europe and worldwide, to support the producers with a range of technical, legal and scientific services, and to anticipate future challenges in the abrasives sector.

FEPA also has strong connections with non-European federations and abrasive producers in countries such as the USA.

The member companies produce all types of high quality abrasives:

  • Bonded abrasives (inorganic and organic);
  • Coated and non-woven abrasives;
  • Superabrasives (diamond and cBN) for precision grinding, and;
  • Superabrasives for stone and construction.

Abrasives are essential components weaved into numerous industries such as construction, automobile, aeronautics, environment, optical activities, glass, electronics… and also DIY.
